Painting with Vernice McClellan
Students will paint their own picture following the instructor’s demonstration. Students will learn the basics of mixing colors, use of brushes and palette knives, and how to proceed from the background, to middle ground to foreground. This is a 6-week class. Drivers over 55 are eligible to receive a 10% discount on their insurance upon completion of this program. The Minnesota Highway Safety & Research Center (MHSRC) offers a unique learning experience for participants by providing instruction from certified professionals who use the most up-to-date research in the field. Instructors have completed 40 hours of training and must complete a recertification program by the MHSRC every three years. No written or behind-the-wheel tests will be given. Walk-in registrations will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

Great Decisions Lecture: Energy and the Global Economy
Presented by Roger Prestwich, Ph.D.
Tuesday, January 12

Rising energy prices, driven by instability in key producing regions such as the Middle East and increasing demand from developing countries, are affecting the global economy. What are the potential consequences of huge wealth transfers to oil exporting states? Are there any realistic alternative energy scenarios on the horizon?

Prestwich is Professor of International Business at Metropolitan State University. He is a member of the MN District Export, and previously was the Education Program Director of the MN Trade Office and Director of the World Trade Conference Center in St. Paul. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Geography and Economics from the University of Minnesota, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar, a Bachelor’s degree from Sheffield University, England, and a Master’s degree in International Relations from Cambridge University, England.

A portrait of the life and works of one of America’s most original artists. O’Keeffe painted the stunning architectural and landscape configurations of northern New Mexico for more than 40 years. Local artist and educator Carole Humphrey’s love for art is “contagious.” She believes art is for everyone and strives to help people see and enjoy art. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Carole received the Lifelong Learning Award from the St. Louis Park Volunteer Program and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, “Art in Bloom” Garden Art Competition Award.

In honor of Presidents Day, come and learn about these two key presidents and their wives. Retired history teacher Mike Hansen is passionate about American History. He is the founder and past president of the Minnesota Chapter of Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. He graduated with honors from Wayne College and had a Coe Fellowship while pursuing a masters degree from the University of Wyoming.

Her Majesty Princess Astrid,the sister of King Harald, gave an audience to Professor Bjerkness in the Royal Palace in Oslo, Norway on his recent visit. Princess Astrid was pleased with the book and remembered Inga Berg, Odell’s aunt, very well. Come and partake in a conversation about this period in the royal family’s life. Laurie Hertzel, book editor for the Star Tribune, said “It’s a slender, lovely book, with reproductions of Berg’s entries and many pictures of the royal family.”

Odell Bjerkness, Professor Emeritus, was on faculty at Concordia College in Moorhead. In addition, he started the May Seminars Abroad program and was Executive Director of the Concordia Language Village for 18 years. In 1981 he received the St. Olav medal from the late King Olav V of Norway for his work to promote Norwegian/American relations. Since his retirement he has lectured extensively for Norwegian Cruise Line and served as an advisor and guest lecturer for the Science Museum of Minnesota.

A Gift of Love: Funeral, Memorial and Health Care Directive

Preplanning is an important part of estate planning, and it is a special gift of love for family and loved ones. By taking time to make thoughtful decisions about your funeral and health care directive in advance, you can relieve your family of a great burden. Ms. Klein will also discuss Social Security and veteran’s benefits, and medical assistance guidelines. Nancy Gelles will discuss the importance of Health Care Directive and a health care agent. A planning guide and sample Health Care Directive will also be covered. Refreshments will be served. Nancy Gelle RN has been with the hospice program since it began as a pilot program in 1979. She has served as a hospice nurse, supervisor and has been in her current role as manager for over 17 years.

Participants will receive planning and Health Care Directive guides.

What can’t you copy? Don’t bring in any tapes, CDs or DVDs you rented or bought. We won’t copy those commercial recordings.
